Snap-8 (Acetyl Octapeptide-3)

Snap-8, also known as Acetyl Octapeptide-3, is a synthetic octapeptide that modulates the SNARE complex - the molecular machinery responsible for neurotransmitter vesicle fusion and release at neuromuscular junctions. It is an extended analog of Argireline (Acetyl Hexapeptide-3), with two additional amino acids that research suggests may enhance its activity.

Mechanism of Action

Snap-8 competitively inhibits the formation of the SNARE complex by mimicking the N-terminal end of SNAP-25 (synaptosomal-associated protein of 25 kDa). The SNARE complex is required for synaptic vesicle docking and fusion with the presynaptic membrane, a prerequisite for acetylcholine release. By interfering with this complex, Snap-8 reduces the magnitude of acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, resulting in reduced muscle contraction intensity. This mechanism has been studied extensively in cosmetic and dermatological research as a topical approach to reducing expression lines.

Key Research Applications

Published peer-reviewed studies have investigated this compound in the context of SNARE complex modulation, neuromuscular junction pharmacology, acetylcholine release dynamics, muscle contraction reduction, expression line formation, and topical peptide delivery models. Researchers continue to explore its potential across multiple experimental models, with a growing body of literature supporting further investigation.
